Commentary on a poem This essay will explore john Tobias’ poem “reflections on a gift of watermelon pickle received from a friend called Felicity” to discover the true meaning of the gift “water melon pickle”. There are many main themes explored. This poem explores the theme of the preservation of memory and the loss of childhood. It depicts a flashback to a day of when the poet was a child, eating watermelon on a hot summer day, initiated by the arrival of Felicity's watermelon pickles. The poem conveys the message of perhaps how memory is unreliable, but uses humour to create an effective poem. However, the poem also portrays the theme of the rebellious stages of being a young teenager. John Tobias utilizes many different literary features to get his message across, manly his choice of structure, vocabulary and imagery throughout. The title in this poem contributes to the meaning of the poem because it gives a brief overview of what is about to happen in the poem. The title of the poem also signifies the initial return to childhood, the gift of watermelon pickles acting as a trigger for the summer memory. This is portrayed by the title starting with “Reflection” as this means remembering and looking back. The title then directly expresses the poet’s thought, contributing to the meaning of the poem.
