Watson’s Theories of Human Caring NUR /403Theories and Models of Nursing Practice Priscilla Ricardo Introduction. | Patient Confidentiality | Introduction to Nursing | | Patient Confidentiality This essay will define confidentiality, when patient confidentiality applies, the importance of patient confidentiality and how to promote confidentiality. It will further look at the main legislation governing patient confidentiality (HIPAA) and when the patient confidentiality can be breached. Patient Confidentiality is very important for a number of reasons and what I feel is the most important of them all is that it improves the nurse – patient relationship. If a patient is aware of how well his or her nurse is committed to protecting their privacy, it builds trust and respect. The trust and respect between the patient and nurse will increase.
Assessment Tool Analysis Paper NUR 440 February 7, 2011 Peggy Taylor Assessment Tool Analysis Paper Assessment tools are used to evaluate, and help in intervening with a patient’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. They enable a nurse or other medical practitioners to help the vulnerable to make more informed choices that will make their life better. Assessment tools can be useful in improving the family dynamics, building more cohesive relationships, and promoting healthier lifestyles. There are of many of these assessment tools, some more effective than others, and it is the responsibility of the practitioner to see which is more likely to fit the dynamic of whatever situation one is attempting to resolve. The three assessment tools that I have selected are as follows: the family adaptability and cohesion scale, the Calgary family assessment model, and the health promoting lifestyle profile II.
This essay concentrates on Carl Rogers’ person centred approach suggesting that therapeutic conditions such as congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy are key to successful personal counselling and growth. Along with this are the basic micro skills used in counselling such as attentive listening, paraphrasing, reflective responses, probing and summarising. It is essential to realise the importance of using basic counselling skills. According to Palmer (2000) in order to be an effective helper it is important that the skills are identified, understood, learned and practiced repeatedly. It is also critical to recognize that the “ use of counselling skills is properly associated with therapeutic, helping or healing ends and not with self centred agendas” ( p. 4).
There is a need to devise a strategy to communicate that would promote empowerment, building on existing strengths so as not to reinforce a sense of helplessness and power imbalance. Studies have showed that by using verbal and non verbal communication techniques appropriately can help us nurses/carers and families to communicate and enhance the communication experience for Mr Kee. For example we should create conducive environment, listen carefully to what he is trying to say, observing his body language, using positive body language to convey warmth and reassurance, speaking slowly, using short and simple words, give Mr Kee opportunities to talk in indirect ways and to express himself, I tried emphasis the need for us nurses/support worker to be creative, adaptable and skilful to avoid disempowering Mr Kee because of his communication impairment (Allan 2001, Feil & DeKlerk-Rubin 2002 and Alzheimer’s Association 2005). ‘One of the ways in which people with dementia are disempowered in communication is that of being continually outpaced, having others speak, move and act more quickly that they are able to understand or match’ (Killick and Allan, 2001, pp.
The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a psychological model that is use in nursing to explain and predict health behaviors of patients diagnosed with chronic disease like MI. In educating the patient using this model, the nurse will focus on the attitudes and beliefs of the patient. The nurse will encourage the patient by educating to recognize and promptly response to signs and symptoms of any complication from the MI. In-depth education opportunities will be planned and evaluated. The overall goal is for the client to return to pre-hospital living condition in an improved state of wellness.
They can ensure smooth handoffs as the patient transitions through the continuum. They often prevent medication errors, reduce infection rates and facilitate patient transitions from hospital to home.
