ITS 101 HW 1 Creative Work after reading “Pink boots and a machete” I don’t enjoy reading much, but I found this book was really interesting and well-composed autobiography by documenting the author’s journey from NFL cheerleader to the primatologist. I also thought that it is also quite inspiring especially for the young teenage girls. The book starts out with Mireya explaining how she'd have many pets in her small home. She lived with her mother, grandmother and aunt, all 3 being strong Cuban women who inspired her through the years. She goes through school life like any other child, and makes it to college where she tries out for the Miami Dolphins' cheerleading squad, and makes it. When she was in college, she put off taking science classes, I think a lot of people have an idea of ‘science is really intimidating’, and so did Mireya. By the end of college, she took the anthropology class and thought it was really interesting. One day, she watched ‘‘Gorillas in the mist’’ thought this was what she wanted to do; she wanted to live with gorillas for the rest of her life. One of the most exciting scenes from the book was that she actually succeeded on discovering the world smallest primate. So she had to do a lot of test to verify if it is really the smallest or if it is the new species. She also spared her time to explain some difficulties that she encountered, being woman in the science field, and becoming an attractive female in the science field is unspeakably difficult, because of the stereotype that women are incompetent or incapable rather than there is the logical perception. Her book is full of adventures, dangers as she has been bitten by sneaks and spiders, survived in the plane crash, so I am actually surprised that she is still here with all the excite things happened around her.
