Self-reflection on Bilingualism Language presentations 1. What did I learn by exploring these texts? What aspects do you remember best? The texts provided to me a great amount of new knowledge on bilingualism that made me realize how important it is to learn at least a second language; not only for your future education, job opportunities and social ease, but for your health and brain functions as well; and that in today’s society it is no longer an and advantage but a requirement. This health effects were precisely what made the biggest impact on me: how being bilingual develops your cognitive flexibility, switching speed and decision making in a very positive way, allowing you to have a faster and more analytically complete brain and to an older age. a. How useful was this information? To a great extent since it proved to be deeply insightful. My topics were about subjects that I had never really given much thought, for example how babies learn to speak, develop better decision making or stimulate areas of the brain, and also how to raise a bilingual child for him to have a boosted learning. All this is not only interesting but I will be able to apply it later on when I form a family. It is valuable information that I wouldn’t have known otherwise. b. How will I apply some of this in my everyday life? Being more conscious on the constructive implications that come along with having a second – let alone a third – language, I will now invest more effort on my everyday use of English and French to make the most out of the opportunities I have at school to learn alongside and from so many native speakers or people like you, Ms. Rojas, that have had the experience of living abroad and shared the culture and language of others. 2.
