I will be a nurse; I will be taking care of people and helping them with their physical and emotional need and I will make them feel as much comfortable as possible. For me nursing is life, nursing is education, nursing is caring for people and understanding what patient is in need for; that is how I would define nursing. My main goal in this point of life is to finish my nursing education and become a good nurse. I am highly inspired by the nurses and their beliefs and the way of communication with patient here. My values will always consider patient first, for me patient’s need and interest is always my first priority, therefor altruism is greatest value for me as a part of nursing.
Through consistent philosophy, all health care providers will strike to deliver high quality care. The leading process of best practice in nursing is through Evidenced-Based Practice (EBP). EBP is defined as “doing the right things right”, (Gray 1997, cited in Craig & Smyth 2007, p.4). This definition illustrates the importance of ensuring that best practice is being done in the right manner which reflects directly through nursing practice in different aspects of patients’ care (Houser and Oman 2011). Moreover, Sackett et al.
I will first provide an overview of the issue in relation to both these fields of nursing and discuss why it is important and the impact it has on nursing care. I will then highlight any similarities and/or differences that may rise between the two fields. Adult nurses provide a high standard of essential personal care with dignity and compassion, while also being able to undertake complex interventions and use specialist skills, such as communication-the basic skill needed to survive as a nurse. Philippa Sully (2003) stated that “development of effective working relationships underpins all aspects of nursing practice. Whether we are exploring the best way to arrange shift cover or discuss with patients and their families the most appropriate community care, how we communicate depends on our professional relationships with all those involved.” In other words, communication is a key aspect in nursing as a whole.
The writer established that the role of the nurse is to identify children and young people who may be at risk and to act to safeguard them. It is important to understand that patient confidentiality is a crucial aspect of the health care profession. According to El-Radhi “any health or social care professional who is involved in patient care has a legal duty to keep information about their patients confidential and access to it should be strictly controlled.” (El-Radhi). It is important to maintain patient confidentiality even in the cases where the patient is a minor however; when there is suspicion that the child is in danger it is the role of the nurse to inform the appropriate authorities. The nurse should be able to identify cases that involve minors in which patient confidentiality must be breached.
Provide patient centered care that involves patient safety, advocacy for the patient and collaboration with other health care providers. The implication is to provide the best care possible for the individual (DEC, p. 2-3.) Metaparadigm discusses the direction that Lamar University (faculty) are instilling in the nursing program. Which describes health, humanity, person, society, environment a reflection of Nightingales Philosophy.
It is the process of protecting an individual identified as either suffering or at risk of suffering significant harm as a result of abuse or neglect. POVA or Protection of Vulnerable Adults was changed and implemented to SOVA or Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults in 2007. This meant that the SOVA register was to replace the POVA and other individuals who are deemed unsuitable to work with children and vulnerable adults. Safeguarding means proactively seeking to involve the whole community in keeping the individual safe and promoting their welfare. Safeguarding is an important part of integrated working.
The nurse has a responsibility to find out if Henry is a vulnerable adult and if so what makes him vulnerable and what makes people in general vulnerable, including concerns that could arise from being vulnerable for example abuse. Patients have rights, so the role of the nurse will be looked at in great depth which will include clinical skills, communication, decision making, teaching, caring and knowledge, and how to address the patients’ rights using some of these skills. Henrys autonomy will need to be promoted by the nurse along with confidentiality, the nurse will have to justify professional conduct and any interventions needed to support Henry and his daughter, this will include autonomy and advocacy. Henrys daughter is very keen to see her father have the operation even though there are major risks involved. Henry is not so convinced and as the procedure looms closer he asks his nurse to help him make a decision on whether or not to go ahead with the procedure.
Although this standard implies that family members should be considered a part of the health care team, HIPAA rules and regulations need to be followed as well. This standard also implies that Mr. E’s values and right to self determination should be honored. The nursing code of ethics that I feel applies to this case study is Provision 1, “The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and the uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems. (ANA, 2001) This code means to me that I, as the nurse, will do everything in my power to advocate for my patients right for self determination, to be open minded and value all
According to Scottish Government (2010) Healthcare Quality Strategy for NHS Scotland, nurse’s carers and people at the heart of the healthcare and care delivery services should improve conditions in NHS Scotland and the care provided, on reading this strategy I understand a nurses responsibility, but the importance of patient participation in their own care is invaluable and the cooperation and communication with the Multidisciplinary Team is essential to complete patient care package to the highest standard. Description of the event/ what happened? When describing the following event the
