Module 1 Assignment :To discuss learning about ‘The Six C’s’ Introduction In this reflective essay, I will be discussing what I have learnt whilst studying at University, and my experience in different aspects of how to become a nurse. I will be focusing on my exposure to a new concept; ‘The Six C’s’. I have chosen this subject as recently nurses have been under scrutiny regarding the quality of care given to patients and whether nurses are competent and able to fulfill their role as a carer. Therefore the subject chosen is something I will be subjected to throughout my training and will hope to continue to practice once I am a registered nurse. I will be using Gibbs (1988) model of reflection as a structure, to facilitate critical thought, relating theory to practice where the model allows. This cycle includes a description, my feelings, an evaluation, an analysis, a conclusion and future action. I will then end it by drawing up a conclusion on the experience of writing this essay, and will allow me to acknowledge my competence and show development. (Ely and Scott, 2007) state that Reflection allows actions to be examined in a systematic matter enabling behaviours; effective or non effective, to be identified and examined. Model of Reflection Being Used The Model I have chosen is Gibbs (1988). Reflection is said to be ‘systematic, and creative thinking about action with the intention of being able to understand the processes’ (Fish and Twinn, 1997). Gibbs quotes “It is not enough to just have an experience in order to learn. Without reflecting upon this, it may quickly be forgotten and the potential for learning may be lost. The feelings from this reflection create generalisations that allow new situations to be tackled effectively” (1988, p. 9) The concept of this model is primarily a structure in which I can proceed to use to my advantage.
