1.1 General The Red River Delta (RRD) is the center of all economic activity in the north of Vietnam. However, this area also has the high population density that forces to have required infrastructure to serve the economic growth and needs of people. One of the most vital constructions in this area is the Ha Noi – Hai Phong Expressway which connects Ha Noi Capital (one of two main economic centers in Vietnam which has the biggest International Airport - Noi Bai) and Hai Phong city (the largest seaport in Northern Vietnam). According to Giao and Hien (2007), the Red River Delta (RRD) consists mostly of Pleistocene to Holocene deposits, including soft clays. Therefore, ground improvement techniques are indispensable for construction in this area. Based on the comparison among different ground improvement methods that are related to time, estimated costs, effective performance and technique limitation in construction, nowadays, prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) is considered as one of the cost effective methods in such soil conditions of the area. In the past, modeling vertical drain (sand drain, prefabricated vertical drain,…) was commonly obtained by using consolidation theory (1-D) [e.g., Barron (1948) and Hansbo (1981)] because of the convenient and less time-consuming. The climate in the study area is tropical humid with a dry season and a monsoon. The rainy season is from May to October and other months fall into the dry season. The mean annual temperature is 23.8 oC (People’s Committee of Ha Tay province; Tu, 2000). The mean annual precipitation in this area is 1500-1800 mm and 85 – 90% of annual precipitation is in the rainy season. From January to April, drizzly weather occurs frequently.
