His three sons plotted to break him and his cellmate, Randy Greenawalt, out of prison. On July 30, 1978, the sons entered the prison for a visit, taking advantage of a policy that allowed an informal picnic setting for weekend family visits, carrying an ice chest packed with revolvers and sawed-off shotguns. [1] One of them aimed a sawed-off shotgun at a lobby guard. Greenawalt helped in the escape by cutting off telephones and alarm systems. [2] They escaped in Donald Tison's 1969 Lincoln Continental, but the next day, one of the Lincoln's tires blew out on a stretch of road not far from the California border, near Quartzsite.

Non-fiction texts 1. You learn about what Elisabeth Hyde has been doing from the title, Rafting on the Grand Canyon, it is a personal account about what her and her family did in ‘early July’ and that it was a ’13 day, 225 mile trip down the Colorado river’. We gather from the imperative, ‘stay in the boat!’, that the activity was potentially dangerous and that it needs rules set for people to be safe, the same imperative is then repeated as rule two which reiterates the importance of it, in addition the river guide ‘shouted’ the command which shows authority and that his orders are not to be taken lightly or dismissed. Later in the article we find out that someone broke the rules, ‘the only one who violated them during the trip was me’, although it was obviously just an accident for every broken rule there is a consequence and it was the river that punished her by ‘ejecting me into the foaming madness’, this shows that the river is as much dangerous and unforgiving as it is a pleasant experience. Another thing we find out is that there is no room for shyness because ‘you’re spending two weeks with two dozen strangers’, part of this is reflected with the boat and how everything is compact like ‘the tightest packing system’.
