Biology 211 I Will Recycle We as humans assume that the environment is not in danger. We believe that as technology advances, we do not need to worry about renewing natural resources, recycling, and finding new ways to produce energy. We tend to believe that one person in the world does not make a large difference. In reality, each individual's contribution greatly affects our environment. Our natural resources are slowly disappearing, and we must work together to save them and the Earth from ruin. Recycling is the act of turning something old or used into something new and it is an important project that everyone should be part of. It is important in the effort to preserve our environment for future generations. Recycling helps the environment in different ways, such as reducing landfills, contamination and saves valuable resources Recycling is a simple and effective way to reduce the amount of waste stored in landfills, which helps the environment by reducing the need for new landfills. We are running out of locations to put landfills. If we do not recycle many landfills where we put garbage will be filled up faster and we will use more of our natural resources to make the products we could have made from recycled material. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, there are over 3,000 active landfills in the United States and over 10,000 old municipal landfills. Because modern landfills are sealed tightly in an attempt to protect the environment from contamination, they also inhibit degradation of organic waste. Items that consumers purchase because they are biodegradable and therefore, are supposed to decay quickly, are taking decades to decay when sealed off from air and water. Papers, including newspapers, are a major filler of modern landfills. If individuals would recycle all of their newspapers, they could significantly prolong
