Whos fault is it? North or South It was a very hard time for all those people in the Civil War. Many people died and there was plenty of destruction after the war. Besides all the harsh times the people went through there was also a hopeful time for everyone. The war was finally over and the slaves were finally freed from their owners. Then comes the period after the Civil War which rebuilds the United States and that is called the Reconstruction. Reconstruction ment the North and the South coming together, and also helping out the slaves by giving them citizenship and equal rights as everyone. Reconstruction started doing good at first, but then the effortless work of everyone working together began to weaken. But who caused the Reconstruction to end? The North or South? Most of the Southerners fought against Reconstruction. By not supporting the Reconstruction violence seemed always the answer to them. An example that I found of extreme violence will be in Doc A which was a letter. It says how it was a letter written by Albion Tourgee a white ex soldier. He described how the person was harshly killed by the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan killed the guy and then they hanged him on a hook in the jury room. This type of violence was meant to scare the Carpetbaggers from the North and also the Scalawags which were some of the white Southerners who supported Reconstruction. Then there is Doc B where African Americans are being treated poorly when the whole idea is to try to bring everyone together. The Ku Klux Klan was also aiming at the African American, and they were also using violence towards them. Abram Colby was an African American who was elected to the Georgia State Legislature. He was whipped by the Ku Klux Klan until he was whipped till death. The reason why the Ku Klux Klan whipped him was because he supported the Republican Party
