Recent Developments in Automatic Vehicle Control Systems We use intelligent instruments and devices in every part of our lives. It would not take much time until we realize that most of our tasks are being done by electronics. Very soon, as we shall see, they will perform one of the most complicated tasks that a person does in a day, that of driving a vehicle. This is for the better. As the days of manned driving are getting extremely numbered, so are those of traffic jams, bad, dangerous and rough drivers and more importantly, accidents. According to Mr. Willie D. Jones in the IEEE SPECTRUM magazine (September 2001), a person dies in a car crash every second. In order to reduce these numbers is to have and develop new automatic vehicles control systems. The automatic vehicles control systems represent the application of sensors, computers, and electromechanical actuators to provide drivers with warnings of hazards, assistance in controlling their vehicles, or fully automated control of vehicle motions. The constraints under which automatic enabling technologies must be brought to maturity, such as cost, reliability, fault tolerance, and environmental hardening, combined with the basic performance requirements. The enabling technologies for automatic vehicles control systems, subdivided into categories of sensors, communication, computation, electromechanical actuators, software and systems technologies, and special tools and facilities. The potential benefits of automating the guidance of automobiles are extensive especially with regard to better utilization of highway space and safety. Proposals for automobile automation have been made for at least fifty years but a practical system has not been possible because of technology limitations. Now, new advances in technology have brought a practical system within reach. To many people the subject of
