Reasons to Go to College Essay

Megan O’Donnell 9/09/12 Paper Assignment 1: College Gillett 6 I am planning on attending college in the fall of 2013. For me, the main reason for attending college is because I have a clear idea of what I want to do in the future. I would ideally like to major in music education with a minor in jazz studies so I can pursue a career teaching middle school wind and jazz ensembles. Taking a year off would result in a mad scramble for letters of recommendation from teachers you haven’t seen in a year and in my case, scrambling to relearn the music you learn junior and senior year for auditions. I strongly believe that students should not take a gap year. According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, college offers career training that most students who take a gap year do not go back to school. I already know what I want to do and how I want to get there, and quite honestly, if I took a year off before going to college, I wouldn’t have the willpower to go back. I have always wanted to go to college. It is a prerequisite to what I want to do with my life. I always wanted to be a music teacher, preferably middle school students. I know that without a diploma from an accredited college, I will not be able to get into a decent graduate school and I won't be able to get any form of a decent job other than something in a cubicle and that's not where I see my life going in 10 years. Studies show that students that attend college immediately after college find more secure jobs than those that delay going to school ( As someone looking at a job in a field that is ever changing with the economy, knowing that a college degree that I earn 4 short years after graduation from high school, it is very enticing.
