Reasons to Go to College Essay

Megan O’Donnell 9/09/12 Paper Assignment 1: College Gillett 6 I am planning on attending college in the fall of 2013. For me, the main reason for attending college is because I have a clear idea of what I want to do in the future. I would ideally like to major in music education with a minor in jazz studies so I can pursue a career teaching middle school wind and jazz ensembles. Taking a year off would result in a mad scramble for letters of recommendation from teachers you haven’t seen in a year and in my case, scrambling to relearn the music you learn junior and senior year for auditions. I strongly believe that students should not take a gap year. According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, college offers career training that most students who take a gap year do not go back to school. I already know what I want to do and how I want to get there, and quite honestly, if I took a year off before going to college, I wouldn’t have the willpower to go back. I have always wanted to go to college. It is a prerequisite to what I want to do with my life. I always wanted to be a music teacher, preferably middle school students. I know that without a diploma from an accredited college, I will not be able to get into a decent graduate school and I won't be able to get any form of a decent job other than something in a cubicle and that's not where I see my life going in 10 years. Studies show that students that attend college immediately after college find more secure jobs than those that delay going to school (www.getdegrees.com). As someone looking at a job in a field that is ever changing with the economy, knowing that a college degree that I earn 4 short years after graduation from high school, it is very enticing.
