Reality TV: Entertainment or Freak Show Television has become a form of entertainment in a society today. There are so many different shows to choose from: comedy, drama, action, cable, and reality shows. Reality shows have become so popular; why go to the movies when you can stay home and have a front seat to the ups and downs of your favorite reality star on television. Some argue reality television is another version of the old style freak shows that existed over a half a century ago. A majority of people believe watching reality shows such as “Little People, Big World”, “16 Kids and Counting” or the “Biggest Loser” may be unethical or only provide opportunities to gawk at people who are different. I believe that reality shows like these are influential and can have a positive impact on different lifestyles that may not get attention otherwise. The reason people watch these shows are because they are curious about topics that we may not otherwise be able to talk about. Sensitive issues like birth control, religion, and the weight of people or people who are born with different handicaps are not topics that we talk about everyday out in the open. If we talk about them we may be considered judgmental or making fun of someone. Reality TV shows are good because they can instigate conversation on taboo topics and can educate the audience watching which is a positive things. They inspire people to lose weight or give hope to those watching that may feel like they are alone in a situation. It may not be the most conventional way to mentor someone or be a role model but many of these reality programs provide just that to audience members. Reality TV gives a voice to normal, everyday people rather than stars; provides exposure to a broad range of human experiences not available in other programs; and may also provide viewers a sense of personal validation, an awareness
