Reading Reflection: The Story of an Hour Reggie Parks ENG 125 Instructor Barbara Green July 21, 2014 Reading Reflection: The Story of an Hour The Story of an Hour written by Kate Chopin is the story of a woman’s response to the news of the death of her husband. The reader is warned at the start of this story that it was a very sensitive situation given the heart troubles of the main character. Upon hearing that her husband is dead, Mrs. Mallard reacts in a way that is not typical of most women whom experience an event such as this. She weeps; however, she also realizes that this tragedy sets her free. Above all else, she sees the freedom that is gained through this loss. Once she allows herself to accept this newfound freedom as her reality; she walks downstairs and is met by her husband at the door—alive and well. At this sight, Mrs. Mallard has a heart attack and dies. This story gains the interest of a reader through raw emotion. It is easy to connect to the character of Mrs. Mallard because of her pure honesty and sincerity. She appears sad that her husband is gone; however, she sees what she can be without him. She is able to see through the tragedy and realize what can come of it. Through this she also allows her true feelings about her husband show. This is engaging because while it seems unconventional it is intriguing. One venue that Kate Chopin utilizes to illustrate her story is the use of imagery. After Mrs. Mallard is informed of the death of her husband, she retreats to her room to be alone. During this time she describes something that she feels approaching her. She describes this thing as subtle and elusive and she says that it is coming from the sky in order to possess her. In this portion of the story, Chopin uses imagery to create description.
