VARK is a magnificent tool online that simply helps identify the different types of learning styles that are out there and helps guide individuals in the right path as far as learning goes. There are many ways that one can approach learning. My personal approaches to learning are practical examples, hands on, and open discussion. These are three ways that I have proven to be effective in my life as it pertains to learning. Practical examples are things that I can relate to that give me a clear picture of what is being taught.
It will help me to better prepare myself for study time and building my reading skills up. With me starting with previewing first, I will be able to summarize what the materials are focused on, and allow me to begin to mentally jot down notes and important facts pertaining to each chapter I read. I am more confident that I will be able to accomplish my reading goals now that I have a stable plan in place! Before, concentration was a huge barrier for me because of the many distractions I have around me. Literacy Acupuncture students are working at degree level and will have to read, research and submit referenced theses. Their work will be checked for fluency, spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax. Speaking, listening and responding are equally important literacy skills. They are also essential for acupuncturists so the course is filled with exercises designed to develop them.
My skills in reflecting on my own work have developed and I set myself daily targets, ensuring I meet them. The staff that I have worked with at both of my placements have been motivational. The English departments constantly endeavour to be better, to achieve more and to support each other. I have modelled myself on the good practice I have seen around me consulting with other members of staff to discover the best ways in which I can support students. In this essay you will see my findings on my particular learning style, personality type, and how I can now benefit by knowing this and how to expand my knowledge in implementing other way of learning. “Overall, learning is a blend of various styles.” (Pheifer, 2009).
