Artists take different approaches towards their work. There are four fundamental roles that they might use when portraying their work. The roles are: 1) they help us to see the world in new and innovative ways; 2) they create a visual record of their time and place; 3) they make fundamental objects and structures more pleasurable by imbuing them with beauty and meaning; and 4) they give form to the immaterial ideas and feelings. Each role will be discussed below. The innovative ways these artists use to show us the world is done to jar us from what we are used to seeing.
Distinctively visual utilise various techniques to convey significant ideas to their audience. A text is constituted to be distinctively visual through the images created and response gained from the audience, by exploring the idea that everything within a text has been deliberately placed there by the composer for a reason, this could be to extend or to challenge our understanding of important concepts or to get the viewer to act these out. The composer does this through the use of visual techniques such as flashbacks, flash-forwards, filters and camera angles. This is evident in ’Run Lola Run’ by Tom Tykwer and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ by Danny Boyle Tom Tykwer’s film Run Lola Run, created in 1998, is a movie about love, determination, and fate. It is a continuous journey about a girl by the name of Lola who is involved in some dangerous business with her boyfriend Manni.
A Journeyer will find that throughout their physical journey they will often find themselves faced with encounters, obstacles and challenges, providing an opportunity for self-discovery and a broader outlook of the world around them. However they are also given the chance to share these opportunities with the people that they encounter along their own journey. These outcomes of journeys are portrayed in Lasse Hallstorm ‘s film, Chocolat, Sally Morgan’s autobiography, My Place and John Marsden and Shaun Tan’s picture book, The Rabbits, where its various characters embark on various journeys, leading them and influencing those around them to new ways of viewing themselves and the world. In the film Chocolat, Vianne’s physical journey, eventually led her to self-discovery and an opportunity to change her way of life. Vianne’s nomadic lifestyle is challenged when she arrives in the tranquil French village, where she stands out as an individual.

The question now arises is that why we in general and teachers in particular should reflect on our practice? Firstly, it is required for personal and professional growth. With the help of reflective writings we attempt to enhance our mental capabilities and improve our practice. Also, it helps us to do things right and be able to justify our actions. Reflective writings make us creative and innovative and facilitate us to consider fundamental issues in learning.
