The Book ‘RAW’, written by Scott Monk raises many issues relevant in today’s society. This novel is about a delinquent teenager named Brett Dalton. He was caught stealing from a bottle shop and was punished by being sent to a rehabilitation centre located in ‘Mungindi’ known as ‘The Farm’. The author brings up many issues such as; Domestic Violence, Trust and Maturity. The Author shows us how the protagonist develops throughout the novel by raising issues that surround him and correcting them. Domestic Violence is a major issue in our society. Scott Monk touches well on this topic through a character, Josh. Josh is the stable hand of the farm and had been staying at the rehabilitation centre for a long time, reason being because he had nowhere to go and wanted a second chance in life. Domestic Violence is a major issue in our society because it can ruin people’s life, which has happened to Josh. After being a victim of Domestic Violence Josh was forced to go against the law and attract attention, this is evident in the text when Josh says, “I got into crime. Not all the character mature during the novel one example being Caitlyn’s Dad, Regardless of his age. In ‘RAW’ Caitlyn’s father says many immature words about criminals and is very stereotypical of them. He calls them,”Gutless dogs!” and “Cowards”. He is also very immature when he being the older one starts a fight for no reason and decides to continue it with Brett. But Brett being the mature one in the end decides that walking away was the right decision and he was contented with this decision, “He’d lost one fight but won another”. The quote, “It’s all my fault! I’m the one to blame!” demonstrates that Brett has become mature because he is taking responsibility for the break up between Brett and his girlfriend
