Rape: The Most Serious of Sexual Assaults Audience: This essay is focused on reaching out to both men and women from ages 18-65+ who have at least a high school education. This argument especially influences those who have been involved with a rape case whether they are a family member of a victim or predator, or were in fact the victim or predator. This essay reaches out to those who seek harsher punishment for rapists but do not have enough information to satisfy their thoughts on leaving punishments as they should be. When it comes to being alone, one can never be too cautious. Thinking of that eerie feeling when passing through an empty parking lot at night can raise a sense of panic in just about anyone. In such a situation, one's awareness of potential threats is dramatically increased. With that, cautionary measures can be employed, such as pretending to take a phone call, or simply rushing to a place of safety like the inside of a store or vehicle. Sometimes these actions can seem a little unnecessary, but they could be the only barriers between a victim and a predator. Moreover, they may not be affective enough to keep a person out of harm's way. Sexual assault can happen at any time. The most serious charge of this broad offense is rape. Fortunately, whether on the state or federal level, the U.S. is doing everything in its power to keep its citizens safe. Current U.S. punishments for serious sex offenders are adequately protecting victims because they allow for states to vary in punishing as they see fit, are working to increase the sentencing standards both inside prisons and out in the real world, and do not have to risk using severe measures such as the death penalty. As not all criminal cases can be handled by the federal government, a large portion of sexual assault cases are addressed on the state level. This helps to narrow
