Alma Garcia Advanced English 9 Mr. Smith 23 September 2013 Necklace-Gift Essay In the short stories “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry and “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant, there are two female characters that sacrifice their most prized possessions to get what they want. Mathilde Loisel in “The Necklace” sacrificed ten years of her life in order to pay off a lost necklace, while Della Young in “The Gift of the Magi” sacrificed her hair to buy her husband a Christmas gift. These two characters are similar in what they sacrifice; however, one sacrifices out of greed and selfishness and the other sacrifices out of love for her husband. Mathilde Loisel is a middle-class housewife who sits at home watching her maid clean while day dreaming about luxury. Madame Loisel believes her life is awful. She truly believes she was cheated in life, that she deserved better. When her husband arrives with an invitation he tried so hard to get for her she rejects it. “Give the card to some friend at the office whose wife can dress better than I can” (Maupassant 29). Mathilde Loisel rejects the card because she doesn’t have the right clothes to go in because her husband isn’t wealthy enough to buy all the luxuries she desires out of greed. Della Young is a newly-married poor housewife who dreams of getting her husband the perfect Christmas gift. Della, a beautiful young loving woman believes her husband deserves a gift that she feels represents him. She feels that her hair is her self-beauty but she ends up cutting it off and selling it to have enough money to buy a gift for her husband to show how much she loves and cherishes him in her heart. When her husband, Jim, comes home she becomes nervous and confused at his reaction to her cutting her hair off. “Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered but nobody could ever count my love for you” (Henry 156).
