The author chose “Encounters in Exile” to show that Rama is about to embark on his journey for 14 years into the forest. This also reveals that there will be problems and disturbances along the way. This relates to the chapter because Rama faces many encounters already as he begins, including Surpanakha, who is in love with him and will do anything she can to be with him. The chapter begins as Rama leaves Chitrakuta, a place in the forest near Ayodyha. As they embark on their journey, the pass the Godavari river and other places such as Chitrakuta. Most of this chapter takes place around Rama and Sitas hut in Panchvati. Also, a part of this story takes place in Lanka, where the evil Ravana lives. New Characters in Chapter 4: 1. Athri- A great sage living in the forest 2. Anusuya- Athri’s wife 3. Kamavalli- The human form of the demon Soorpanaka 4. Jatayu-The great eagle 5. Soorpanaka- A demon, Ravana’s sister 6. Kara- One of Ravanas step brothers The chapter opens as Rama and Sita, clothed in tree bark, head off into the forest with Rama’s brother Lakshmana who built a nice cosy hut for the couple whever they go. Many creatures live in the forest like the great eagle, Jatayu, who Rama and Sita meet. They also meet Kamavalli, who appears as a beautiful woman and who falls head over heels in love with Rama. In reality, Kamavalli is the demon Soorpanaka, who is Ravanas sister. Kamavalli si love stricken and of course is very jealous of Sita. Soorpaaka begins to stalk Sita, planning on removing her from Rama’s side. Right as she pounces on Sita, the attentive Lakshmana swoops down to rescue her. Lakshmana cuts off Soorpanaka’s nose,ears, and breasts. Soorponaka is extremely angry and still demands to have Rama so shw swores revenge on them. She goes to her step-brother Kara who sens back with a huge army of demons, onlu to be defeated
