Lord of the Flies Ralph and Piggy Compare and Contrast Paragraph In the novel “Lord of the Flies” by Willam Golding, Piggy and Ralph have many differences and little similarities. Firstly, they are both around the same age. Ralph was twelve and a few years old and it is perceived that Piggy is too. Piggy and Ralph are both fairly intelligent. Ralph knew they had to pick a leader. Someone had to be in charge if they were to survive. Piggy wanted to write down a list of everyone’s name to keep count of everyone who was on the island. This was to make sure that if someone disappeared, they would know who was missing. Piggy and Ralph both wanted to keep law and order. Piggy would get mad when people would not do their tasks. Although Piggy was the one not doing any work. There was also quite the contrast between the two. Ralph is old enough to lose “the prominent tummy of childhood” (10). He could be a boxer with his wide shoulders. He is also athletic and can swim. Piggy on the other hand was fat. He can also not swim, as he had never learned how. Ralph is also ignorant. When Piggy informs Ralph that he has asthma, Ralph responds with “Ass-mar!?” (9) Ralph is a natural born leader, while Piggy is a follower and lazy. When everyone was doing work, Piggy would just stand around and get mad at them when they were not doing work.
