In the movie Dumbo, the crows represent what at that time, would be considered a stereotypical black person. They are portrayed as loud and obnoxious, talking in black lingo by calling each other “brother” and singing in black jive. In the movie, the crows appear to be lazy with nothing to do but sit and make fun of an elephant. Although a child may not see that negative characterization, they may associate black people to the crows when they hear them talk. In Disney movies many of the women are portrayed as having the perfect figure and always winning the male hero in the end.
Every movie I watched growing up instilled this very image into my brain. One of my favorite movies was Beauty and the Beast. Beauty and the Beast is your typical fairy tale; a witch turns a handsome shallow price into an ugly beast and tells him he must find someone to fall in love with to break the curse. “Beautiful” girl meets mean ugly Beast, falls in love with him, and breaks the curse. There are many disturbing images in this storyline, but the most disturbing by far is how Beauty and the Beast reinforces typical female gender stereotypes.
She gets decorated with ribbons and bows on her mane and she’s fed special treats and lumps of sugar, while the other animals don’t get fed well, if at all that day. When Napoleon and Snowball begin to convince the animals to rebel, all Mollie wants to know is “Will there be sugar after the rebellion?” and “Shall I still be allowed to wear ribbons in my mane?”(Pg.35-37) After the rebellion as the training goes on and Snowball is trying to teach the animals how to read and write “Mollie refused to learn any but the six letters which spelt her own name.”(pg.50) Once Mollie is expected to work, “On every kind of pretext she would fun away from work and go to the drinking pool, where she would stand foolishly gazing at her own reflection in the water.” (pg.61) This behavior demonstrates that Mollie is being portrayed as vain, shallow and self centered. Mollie begins to have a difficult time with her new life on Animal Farm, as she craves the attention of human beings, and
Seeing the ugly duckling for the first, a “spiteful duck,” (Andersen) “flew out and bit him in the neck” (Anderson). This blatant act of malice was strictly because of his looks. Thought out the rest of his Life the Ugly Duckling bears numerous horrible acts, from being verbally abused by a hen to being so neglected that he feels the need to avoid all contact with other animals and humans. This however helped the swan become who he is at the end of the story. At the end of Andersen’s fairytale the beautiful swan summarizes,
When she moves to St. Louis and sees her mother for the first time, she is struck by her mother’s beauty. She thinks her mother is too beautiful to have children, and that is the reason why her mother sent her away. Marguerite thinks she is a “Black ugly girl”, at the same time, she is a girl full of imagination. She imagines once she puts her dream Easter dress on she will be a sweet little white girl with long and blond hair. She also imagines the conflict between her grandmother and the white dentist Dr. Lincoln after he said he would rather stick his hand in a dog’s mouth than treat Marguerite’s problem.
We black and they white." This shows how there is a “colored line” and how racism divides the “white” and the “black”. In “Native Son”, racism is unavoidable. Bigger is painfully aware that he is socially handicapped by his black skin, and expresses his frustrations when he says, “Every time I think about it I feel like somebody’s poking a red-hot iron down my throat. Goddammit, look!
The king's semi-barbaric method of administering justice was quite ironic. Behind one door was a beautiful woman hand-picked by the king and behind the other was a fierce tiger. We know who the lady is behind the door. We also know that the daughter really hates her as it says in this quote, “She hated the woman who blushed and trembled behind the silent door.” The offender would be placed in an arena where his only way out would be to go through one of two doors. Even though throughout the story we have only witnessed the princess as non barbaric, let et us not forget the "savage blood" that coursed through her and the "barbaric" ancestry she came from, and the fact that she hated the woman behind the door.
The narrator goes on to state "And the bull moose let them stroke his tick-ravaged flanks, let them pry open his jaws with bottles, let a giggling girl plant a little purple cap of thistles on his head". These despicable acts by the civilians, reminds me of the torture that Jesus went Page 2 through for us. "The Bull Moose" is a fairly crafted poem which reminds us of how far man has strayed from nature. In the poem "Traveling Through the Dark", the civilians shows dominance but in a different way. In this poem, the civilian was
If slavery is wrong in the best of cases, in the worst of cases it is a nightmare and very inhuman. Stowe deflates the defense of the pro-slavery by showing the evil of the best kind of slavery and then she presents her own case against slavery by showing the shocking wickedness of slavery at its worst. The system of slavery and the moral code of Christianity oppose each other. No Christian should be able to tolerate slavery. Throughout the
With this message being present in the film it is showing children that Asian/Americans are sly and sneaking around. Disney movies portray many African Americans to be shown to always be having a good laugh. This common misconception is present in many of Walt’s children’s films. Dumbo has the scene with the murder of crows laughing and making a joke of Dumbo and the mouse Timothy and continually
