Racism, Bigotry, Hate Crimes, etc. The world is a very interesting place. There are many different people with different beliefs. There is no such thing as a perfect world though. If the world were to be perfect then there would not be racism or people who were against immigrants or gays. Everyone would accept everyone for his or her beliefs of religion and culture. Since the world is not perfect these people and things exist. According to Global Issues, “racism is defined as the belief that characteristics and abilities can be attributed to people simply on the basis of their race and that some racial groups are superior to others” (Global Issues.org). Racism is difficult to define though, since everyone defines it differently. Racism is everywhere and happens everyday. “It is because they are black” or “it is always the black kids” are comments I hear frequently. Even though the person may be joking, racist comments can be very hurtful and unnecessary in the mind of the person that is the victim of the racist comments. “No matter what culture you are from, you have seen the results of racism even if you have never directly felt racism directly toward yourself” (GLSEN.org). People do not realize sometimes that racism is happening around them. Racism is a negative effect on society. According to GLSEN, racism prevents the victim of racism from achieving his or her full potential as a human being (GLSEN.org). What can be done about this? According to GLSEN, reducing racism is a complex task that varies from community to community. GLSEN suggested certain ways as a whole to reduce racism. In workplaces, talk to people of color and of different races on your staff and ask them what attitudes they face that hold them back when raced with racism (GLSEN.org). In school areas, recognize holidays and events relating to different varieties of cultures.
