Black Americans were publically beaten, frightened, and even killed (Magar, 2010). These practices did not stop until 1964 when the Civil Rights Act banned discrimination against race among many other things. Today stereotypes continue to create discrimination but not to the levels of the early 1900s. Everyone needs to remember that Black Americans have more than 400 years of stereotypes to overcome. African Americans have many conflicts and struggles to deal with.
Most recently, many have opted to support the decision makers and law enforcement officers involved in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases. However, several still continue to condemn the final verdict of these two cases and wonder how such violent acts committed by police force have served no justice. As a nation, we have come a long way from racial discrimination and inequality; but why do we continue to witness such significant disparities within the American Justice System? Rates of incarceration between African Americans and Hispanics as opposed to Caucasians vary greatly. How many legislative experts within the U.S. justice system are African Americans compared to Whites?
The per capita income was less than half that of Los Angeles as a whole, and poverty and unemployment rates were more than twice as high. Additionally, drugs, crime, and gang violence had all become visible problems in South Central Los Angeles. Although the acquittal of the four officers was the immediate precipitant of the 1992 riots, there were many factors that had a part in the violence. First of all, the living conditions of poor, urban blacks had not improved in the past 10 years, racial tensions were high due to personal prejudices and institutional racism, and an increased foreign immigration led to inter-ethnic hostility. They were triggered by micro issues from conflict between members of minority community and the justice system, the violence was initiated by members of the minority community, and the looting and burning of businesses were the major forms of property crimes.
Every day, people of color are targeted for searches for criminal activity and interrogations without evidence of criminal activity. In a survey conducted by the Washington post and the Black America’s Political Action Committee (BAPAC), they found that almost fifty percent of black people have suspected themselves of being racially profiled. This surprisingly high number is evidence of racism’s presence in today’s society. Supreme Court justice Marshall said it best in the 60s, the zenith of rascism in America,”[a] white man came up beside me in plain clothes with a great big pistol on his hip. And he said, Nigger boy, what are you doing here?
Although many nations did not like the letter, all countries to which it was sent, except Japan, had expressed approval at the ideas and goals that it espoused. Even though some of the ideas it presented were unpopular with the Imperialist nations, the Open Door Policy was a very event document in Chinese history. In the Open Door Notes, John Hay suggested indiscriminate taxation between nations. Hay defined indiscriminate taxation as not imposing taxes based on nationality. Many countries at the time had strong power in their
Moreover, further statistics show that black people are seven times more likely and Asians twice as likely to stopped by police compared to their white counterparts. Some may say that racism can be a result of a ‘canteen culture’ where some officers hold negative stereotypes of ethnic minorities and pass on their views to their colleagues which will lead in a general negative stereotype among the police force. Reiner explains that characteristics of canteen cultures include cynicism, suspicion, macho values and racism. On the other hand, the McPherson inquiry after the murder case of Stephen Lawrence concluded that the police force was institutionally racist. This meant that police procedures and culture disadvantaged non-white people in an indirectly racist way.
Discrimination At that period mostly Black Americans were uneducated, unskilled, and unprepared to provide their own basic needs, even though Black Americans had been stated citizens with all the rights promises to every people. A member of white people is still blended with the blacks wherever they are. So even though they already free from slavery, there still a large case about discrimination. After the Civil War, a great number of blacks were finally moved to the bigger cities in the North. And their living is proved better and they have a greater freedom but still in difficult conditions.
Within the criminal justice system, discrimination occurs when a person is treated differently than other groups of people because of their race. This has been a problem in America ever since slavery and segregation was abolished, and while slavery and segregation are no longer issues, minorities are still treated unfairly by law enforcement and criminal justice professionals on a daily basis. Discrimination occurs when minority people, particularly African American and Hispanic men, are victims of racial profiling, police brutality, excessive bail and death row for committing crimes equal to their white counterparts. Discrimination against minorities occurs within every level of the criminal justice system, but is a problem that is widely
From earlier times to more recent times it is obvious that racism is a part everyday life. When Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in sports in 1947 he had imagined that by today things would have changed significantly, and to some extent they have. Even though African Americans are now allegedly offered similar treatment in sport, they are still treated differently. In all sports there is a very small percentage of African American coaches and managers. In some cases the black coach has had a much better resume, but still not given the job.
This is because they are not of the norm and because they have a different belief system than others. Muslims have been stereotyped from all aspects of their life since 9/11. Muslims who had been in the United States longer than some Christians were suddenly being verbally and physically attacked by those Christians. More and more, they were being accused of misdemeanors that they had never done. They were citizens like everyone else; the difference was that they were the only ones being questioned.
