Vlad DePierre Race, Class, & Gender Identity Paper Who are you? Do you believe your life has been influence by the environment around you or does it all depend on the genes that you have inherited? This is a debate that has been going on for years. Finally researchers have found that both the environment and genes have an equal impact. So my question is, why are people still being treated so differently? In the world that we live in we want to believe that everyone has equal rights no matter what. We want to believe that a person’s race, class, or gender will not determine how they are being treated on a day to day basis. In the past women were given the inside chores or cleaning, and cooking; meanwhile the men were expected to outside chores such as taking out the garbage and mowing the lawn. Today the typical role of cooking and cleaning is not only done by the women in the family but by the men as well. As a child I remember being slightly confused about the role switch but I am glad that I experience this concept at such a young age. I have learned that there is truly no such thing as a man’s job and a women’s job, everyone is capable of doing whatever they commit themselves to. Being raised by a single mother has also taught me this lesson, because my mother took on the role of being both a mother and father to my sister and I. The expectations given were to always try your hardest, try to be successful in everything that you do, and be happy. Since I am one of the first members of my family to attend college, my expectations are set very high. I have been given the expectations of not only completing college but as well as being a role model to a large amount of younger cousins. Of course this is a lot of pressure, but the pressure is what pushes me harder. I enjoy the fact that I am not only accomplishing this goal for myself but I am also doing it for everyone around
