Pauli Sam Adams sat at his desk, gazing out over a windswept, rainy parking lot towards a darkening horizon. The lowering sky and gathering gloom matched his unsettled mood. In a few minutes, Sam knew, his telephone would ring. He would then walk from his office down a short corridor to the elevators and take the brief ride to the sixth-floor executive suite. Once there, he would be ushered into the presence of the board of directors, whose meeting was already underway, and asked a very simple question—would he recommend his friend and former colleague, Bud Wizer, for the company’s open Division Manager position? On his job application Bud had listed Sam as a personal and professional reference, so Sam knew that the board of directors considered their question to be pro forma—they all assumed that he would give Bud a ringing endorsement, Bud would be given an offer, and that would be that. There was just one problem: Sam had no idea what he was going to say. As he sat waiting for the call, Sam cast his mind back three years to the conversation he’d had with his wife, Stella Artois, the day he’d heard what happened to Bud. He’d called Stella as soon as the news broke—now he replayed their conversation in his mind: “Hello, Stella?” “Sam? You sound funny. Are you all right?” “No, I’m not all right.
