Question 1: Take a look at the material on sensation seeking on page 278 (Chapter 8). Do you consider yourself a sensation seeker? Why or why not? What are the advantages and disadvantages of your level of sensation seeking? Answer: After reviewing the information on page 278, I can see that I am not much of a sensation seeker. There are times when I do take risk and can be spontaneous, however it is not something that happens often. After thinking about the question of “Why” for a while, I think it could be because I like having a safe life. Ever since I have been on my own at 18, I have wanted a family and I play it safe for them. I have never had a desire to “do crazy things” or “be impulsive” because I like having some control over what happens to me. The advantages would be that I very well may remain safe from a lot of unknowns. I also feel that by thinking and planning before I start complicated tasks will allow me to do better at my task. Thinking before acting can help me make wise decisions. However, some disadvantages would be that I can have a lot less fun in life. There will be experiences that I will miss out on. People that I won’t meet and things I will never do. Question 2: How would you rate your own achievement motivation? Why? In what ways is this an advantage to you? In what ways is it a disadvantage? Answer: My motivation is driven by the need for achievement. I am always looking to do whatever it is that I do, very well. I make sure that I am the best at my job, whatever it is that I am doing. I try very hard to excel at school by getting A’s if it’s in my power. I work hard to accomplish everything, and not just accomplish it but to nail it with flying colors. For instance, when I am asked to throw a baby
