History Control Assessment Question 2 How valid is the interpretation of the site you have been provided with? Test the validity of the interpretation and support your answer using the site, sources and own research. “Samuel Greg was for his time a benevolent employer” This is a quote from, Quarry Bank Mill and Styal guide book. I will be answering this quote using, various sources and information I gained from my visit. I will also be comparing sources, stating their reliability and I will use my own research. Finally, I will conclude on what my opinion is. The Quarry Bank Mill and Styal guide book was published in 1995, hence a secondary source. Therefore it may not be very reliable as it was written over nearly, 150 years after Samuel Greg’s death. One purpose of this book was to interest tourist(s)/people to visit Quarry Bank Mill, so it may have been exaggerated to create a better view of the mill to other readers. On the other hand a lot of effort had been put into this book as it was an information booklet. For this reason many historians must have checked it over and over again, so it maybe a reliable source of evidence. Samuel Greg was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1758. He was the child of Thomas Greg and Elizabeth Hyde. He had 12 brothers and sisters. Thomas Greg was a successful merchant and a ship-owner. Samuels’s mother’s family was a rich one. Her brother Robert Hyde was a merchant in Manchester. He imported linen thread from Ireland and used weavers in Lancashire to turn it into cloth. When Samuel was orphaned he joined his uncle, Robert Hyde’s company in Manchester. There he learnt a lot about the cotton trade. Samuel inherited £300 when his father died, but following his uncles death, he was left £30,000. At that time Samuel was 22years old. Through this he opened a mill in Cheshire in 1784.
