Quality of Life for Cancer Patients Assignment Psychological factors can determine the possibilities of a person’s development when they are diagnosed of a disease or illness, leaving them with either a positive or negative impact on their life. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 23 percent of all deaths. What could increase the risk of cancer? According to health psychologist, a unhealthy diet, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and promiscuous sexual behavior (especially females in their teens), can increase the risk of cancer. 1.5 million people in the United States who are diagnosed with cancer each year, have the uncompromising task of adjusting to a potentially life-threatening disease, along with a chronic stressor with it. There is no solid evidence that stress causes cancer. however, It does influence how people with the disease respond to and cope with the treatments. When life’s obstacles become exhausting to over come, it is easy for a person to naturally give up. Believing in yourself with an optimistic outlook on the situation can help someone become less stress. If a cancer patient is fulfilling themselves with encouraging and empowering thoughts during such a critical time, it will resolve into a positive impact. Optimism may not cure their disease, but it will benefit their well being with coping and during the mental process of treatment. Researchers found that 3 months and 6 months after surgery, breast cancer patients who maintained an positive outlook, accepted the reality of the condition their health was in, and maintained a sense of humor, experienced less distress. In comparison, patients who were in denial, refused to accept the harsh reality of their disease, and contemplated on giving up, experienced higher levels of distress.
