Theory - an explanation for the way things are, usually supported by a lot of data. Hypothesis - possible way things could be. It refers to a statement of cause and effect. Dependent variable - The dependent variable is the variable that is being measured in an experiment. Independent variable - The independent variable is the characteristic of a psychology experiment that is manipulated or changed. Control group - The control group is the group in an experiment or study that does not receive treatment by the researchers and is then used as a benchmark to measure how the other tested subjects do. Experimental group -The group of participants exposed to the independent variable or treatment. Placebo - A placebo is a substance with no known medical effects, such as sterile water, saline solution or a sugar pill. The placebo effect refers to the phenomenon in which some people experience some type of benefit after the administration of a placebo. Reflex arc - A reflex arc is a neural pathway that controls an action reflex. This is what causes reflex actions. A great example to explain reflex arc is the jerking or pulling of your hand back after accidentally touching a hot pan. Brocas Area was named after French surgeon and anthropologist, Paul Broca who found this area in the brain. Broca's Area is located in the frontal lobe of the brain and acts as the speech center. Although there are other areas of the brain that also influence speech, Broca's Area is considered the central component. Wernicke's area is the region of the brain that is important in language development. The Wernicke's area is located on the temporal lobe on the left side of the brain and is responsible for the comprehension of speech.
