Analyse the impact of urban renewal and urban decline on the Sydney suburb of Pyrmont. The Western Sydney CBD suburb of Pyrmont on the shores of Sydney Harbour has undergone extensive changes through the process of urban renewal. Legislation by local governments has been the driving force to the ultimate success of the well planned renewal for a decaying ex-industrial area, into a thriving cosmopolitan residential area, an efficient and sophisticated business centre, and a popular recreational and tourist hub. In the 19th and early 20th Century Pyrmont was a vital part of the CBD in terms of industry, warehouse and ports. Transport was a major issue in those days so the convenient location of Pyrmont made it extremely popular for residents as well, with the population peaking around 19,000 as shown in Figure 1. This changed with the introduction of the car and the demanded increase in industry size due to more mechanized rendering. The development of new port technology needed new facilities and large areas of land for container storage, known as containerization also caused this movement. The construction of larger industrial sites occurred in the outer areas of Sydney that were close to the major transport routes. The result of this was extreme urban decay of Pyrmont area during the 1960’s and 1970’s with abandoned and rundown factories and warehouses dominating the streetscape. The population of the area had declined dramatically to only 3000 and the whole area had taken on the atmosphere of urban decay. During the late 70’s and early 80’s, government agencies saw the decaying Pyrmont as an opportunity to create an attractive area that encourages a new culture and demographic.
