“Pursuing Happiness, Not an Easy Path to Follow”

The challenges of life can seem overwhelming at times as though problems arrive on an endless conveyor belt delivering one headache after another. How an individual responds to the challenges and demands of life has much to do with the overall quality of life they enjoy and if they may or may not consider themselves “happy.” This is the main theme of the movie The Pursuit of Happyness starring Will Smith as Christopher Gardner a seemingly luckless salesman who struggles to survive an avalanche of problems and setbacks, but through perseverance and determination discovers how to overcome the challenges and becomes successful and happy. In the beginning of the movie Gardner makes a bad investment decision which wipes out his lifesavings and precipitates a series of misfortunes that leave him divorced, broke, homeless, and in the care of a small child. Sometimes when a person is overwhelmed by problems they may want to give up and figure why keep trying. Still others persevere and endeavor to rise above whatever challenges life may present them. This is the case with Gardner who finds inspiration and motivation to keep going despite his difficult circumstances in order to provide for the health and wellbeing of his son. Every person in life is faced with unique challenges. The choices a person make often determines the type of challenges they have to deal with in order to be successful and happy in life. My life is no exception. Indeed, when I look at my own life I see where I have had to deal with many unique challenges which sometimes seemed impossible to overcome. Especially with regard to leaving my native country Colombia after my husband and I married and I came to the United States for the first time. There were so many challenges that I often wanted to curl up in despair: a new language, a different culture with different customs that took getting used
