The Puritans were members of a religious movement that began in England, which then spread to the American colonies. The name Puritans came from their desire to purify the Church of England. The Puritans believed that too much power rested within the priest and other people with high authority in the Anglican Church. The Puritans were hated in England, so they eventually fled their own persecutions at home and migrated into the American colonies; this is where they established their own religion. The Puritan colonies of America developed in quite a different way from previous England. They lived completely different live styles and had entirely different values than those of other English settlers. The Puritans had many different ideas and values that influenced the political, economic and social development of the New England colonies throughout the years of 1630 and 1660. They Puritans had many different important ideas they believed in; one being religion was very important to them, regards involving their religion came to be the reason why they migrated to the American colonies. These values and ideas led the Puritans to influence the expansion of the colonies. The Puritan’s value of hard work and education greatly shaped the political, economic, and social growth of New England from 1630 through the 1660’s. “It is therefore for every man to be studious of the bounds which the Lord hath set: and for the people, in whom fundamentally all power lies, to give as much power as God in His word Gives to men”…( H). But the main contributing factor in development was the importance of their religion. “After God had carried us safe to New England, and wee had builded our houses, provided necessaries for our livelihood, rear’d convenient placed for Gods worship, and settled the Civil Government:” (E).
