Ariel Widener February 21, 2012 Different Punishments With the world at a standstill on punishment the stories, “Bring Back Flogging” and “Douse” tell stories of two different purposes brought together leading to the same outcome of the punishment pursued inside the words written. “Bring Back Flogging” talks about the punishment in the old days as well as the modern times. On the other hand, “Douse” states different situations dealing with the Internet pinpointing cyber-bullying. It is said that punishment was different in the old days, but can that really be proven. They might have used different weapons and methods, but that was probably normal for them times. Just like the modern times have their way of punishing people, so did the earlier generations. It seems as people would love to use every excuse as to blame someone for something they did. Maybe that is why the criminal justice system is not a success. “We cage criminals at a rate unsurpassed in the free world, yet few of us believe that the criminal justice system is a success” (Jacoby 193). Humans are staring to lose confidence in the criminal justice system more and more every day. Another reason why criminals are expanding is because some criminals do not even get locked up or they will get out on good behavior. It seems a little unorthodox for someone that just committed a felony gets off on good behavior when they have nothing to show for it. It seems as if cyber-bullying is a cruel way to treat someone. Any identity can be created on the Internet and that could be a good thing or a bad thing. Many things happen on the web and people hurt certain ones and do not get the punishment they should. Cyber-bullying has led to murders including suicides. The Internet is a huge tool when it comes to the subject taunting others. It is an easy way to call someone out or even get a date with the Craigslist killer. Dating websites and chat rooms are an obvious way to reel in the next victim that is on the next kill list seems as the criminal justice system should crack down on the Internet and that would drop the crime rate.
