“Most people associate PTSD with battle–scarred soldiers–and military combat is the most common cause in men–but any overwhelming life experience can trigger PTSD, especially if the event feels unpredictable and uncontrollable” (HelpGuide.org, 2011). Many times Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can go undiagnosed in military personnel and veterans for a long time. We associate Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with our military because of the combat and situations they are exposed too, but Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can happen with anyone who suffers from a traumatic event. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that can occur after a traumatic event that either threatens a person’s safety or makes someone feel helpless.
A barrier often seen with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) patients is completion of therapy, especially with the veterans and active duty soldiers. Although active members are more like to receive the treatment required verse veterans because of health care access. “Treatments that have been identified as most effective for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) typically require 10-12 weekly sessions. The challenge is that fewer than ten percent of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with newly diagnosed Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) complete this recommended dose of treatment” (Drug Rehab Information, 2010). It can be very difficult for veterans to get the help they need because it takes a very long time for them to get an appointment. In military facilities a referral is often required for medical specialties and there can be waitlist if it is not an emergency. Another reason may be because many veterans have other health problems more pressing, like alcohol and drug dependency.
