Difficult 50pts – Diagrams and Labels Sigmund Freud 1856 – 1939 Vienna, Austria Psychosomatic Illness Primal Blueprint -Interaction with the body and the mind -Died in London; went to escape the Nazis. -Freud said that the personality is comprised of 3 interacting forces; ID, Ego, Superego 27 September 2010 -ID operates under the; 1) Pleasure Principle- to avoid pain and achieve pleasure. -“If it feels good, do it.” 2) Primary Process -consist of creating a memory image (Wish fulfillment) to reduce pain or tension. -The Primary Process utilizes four subsystems; 1) The sensory system 2) The motor system 3) The perceptual system 4) The memory system -The ID wants what it wants when it wants it. It is totally selfish and amoral. -Baby is pure ID. -The Ego – 1) Is the conscious mind one’s awareness. 2) Self-concept. 3) The ability to reason and problem to solve. -The Superego is the moral and judicial branch of the personality and represents the basic values of society. 28 September 2010 -Freud “Without the experience of pain there can be no psychological development.” ^The Primary Process^ -The ID cannot distinguish between fantasy and real life. -The Primary Process is useful in waking life because it helps us identify what we want to satisfy a need. -The ID is; The seed of psychic energy Disorganized Does not change with the passage of time Not in contact with the external world/reality Lacks reason, logic Does not possess values, ethics or morals Driven by one consideration; the pleasure principle Does not think, it only wishes or acts -The Ego-Conscience mind
