In order to establish the stressfulness of each event they enlisted the help of 400 participant and they were asked to score each of the 43 life events with a numerical figure of how much readjustment would be needed, taking marriage as an arbitrary baseline value of 50. They suggested that people with an LCU of between 200-300 have a 50% chance of getting ill, while a score over 300 increases this to 80%. Lazarus suggests that major life changes are relatively rare in most people’s lives. Instead he argues that it is the minor daily stressors (hassles) a person’s experiences which will impact on their health. For example, De Longis studied stress in 75 married couples.
Garcon is a hero, not because of the way he performed when his country was in turmoil, but because of the way he was able to go out, strap on his pads, and proudly represent his people despite being affected emotionally by the earthquake. Pierre Garcon’s family described him as an honorable young man. At the age of 23, Garcon inspired many people to believe that just because someone comes from a poverty stricken community, it doesn’t mean that they’re entitled to live there forever. Despite having the earthquake flowing through his mind, Garcon knew that he still had an obligation to perform on the football field. Football is his job, his dream, his one true love.
He played multiple sports when he was young, and eventually realized that he excelled at sprinting even without lower legs and decided that he would focus on the sport. People started to take notice of this legless sprinter, and as Pistorius rose up the ranks, many wondered whether his metal racing leg replacements, or “blades,” were truly a benign replacement for legs, or an advantage that was helping this inspiring athlete to outclass his competition. On one side of this ethical dilemma, the blades were considered an advantage for Oscar because there is no truly objective way to know whether they were helping him to win his races. The blades do not fatigue as human legs would during the course of a grueling and intense 100 or 200 meter sprint. Until he was evaluated scientifically, there was no way to compare the blades to how a human leg would perform in terms of pushing force and the interaction that the blades would have with the ground compared to the combination of a sprinters shoe, foot, and leg
Life lessons involving responsibility, trust and accountability are shown and taught by people who truly care about their team as a whole, not just themselves. In order to achieve greatness in life as an individual, one must be taken out of their comfort zone and take hold of the responsibility in order to accomplish a goal. The football team at Woodinville High School was not very successful during the years of 2009 and 2010. They failed to make playoffs both years and the athletes in the 2011 class knew a call to action had to be done to make positive changes within the program. Growing up as a kid playing sports with most of the guys in my graduating class since I was in elementary school, it was noticed over the years that the senior leadership who most of the athletes are conditioned to look up to, were not exactly leaders.
In the movie Rudy, Rudy wants nothing more then a chance to be in the football game to make his parents proud. It’s his senior year when he finally gets a chance to play. Even though it wasn’t that long he is ecstatic because he overcame years of just practicing and finally made his parents proud. Not only were his parents happy for him but his teammates were ecstatic. The underdog is someone who makes everyone stronger, by proving that hard work does pay off.
When this question was first asked in 1965, 84% of Americans rated the FBI very favorably. Much of the downward trend in very favorable opinions of the FBI appears to have occurred in years past, however. The percentage with a very favorable opinion decreased to 52% in 1973, and dropped to 37% in 1975, the last time this question was asked in this format before last week. The FBI ranks low when compared to local and state law enforcement agencies. Sixty-three percent of the public said they had a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in their state police, and 59% said the same thing about their local police.
Why Adversity Has Made Me Stronger Have you ever wondered why everyone uses the saying, “what doesn’t kill us, only makes us stronger”? Well, I had always wondered that very same thing myself. I had thought about it so much, that it drove me crazy, and then when I joined the military I realized what it meant. Adversity makes us stronger because it challenges us, pushes us to new limits that we never knew we had, and helps us realize who we are or who we can be. When I was growing up in a small town, everyone was believed to either be a junkie, an ingrate or of wealth.
The characters from both plays are indirectly compared, for instance the two youngest sons, Cory and Biff. Cory and Biff were compared through football and their father's, the contrast between the boys were where they went in life and the relationship they had with their father's. Football was a passion for both Cory and Biff, neither of the boys played football past high school, but they were both good players. Cory was very driven to play football even when his father constantly disapproved. Biff didn't have the same drive that Cory had but he still loved the game, it was a lot easier for him to be more interested in football when he had the support from his father.
I remember the first quarter so well. I played horrible that quarter which I couldn’t understand coming off an outstanding performance from the season opener where I recorded a school record for the amount of tackles by a single player in one game. I couldn’t understand why I was having such a bad first quarter. Was it because of the mixed emotions and excitement for this big game? Was it because I was thinking too much because it was on live TV?
Stories were often told to me about his playing days and shortly after someone would pop the big question; “Do you play ball”, or “Are you going to play ball”? Those questions made not want to play because I felt I needed to be my own person. Finally when I reached to high school I decided to play football. Little did I know this decision would change my life for ever. When I first arrived on the football team there were no expectations.
