PS3 vs. Xbox 360 Video games have come a long way in recent years. New technology and increasing popularity make video games one of the fastest growing industries in the world with no sight of slowing down. Two of the latest and greatest contributions to the video game industry’s success are Sony’s Playstation 3 (PS3) and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. These two consoles represent the two most advanced home video game systems on the market today. Even though both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 provide similar home entertainment, there are several technical differences that can play a key role in ones decision of which one will be a wiser investment. Perhaps the most desired aspect of a video game console is the graphic capability. A PS3 has an eight-core CPU where an Xbox 360 has only three cores. The PS3 uses each of its eight cores for different tasks while the Xbox 360 uses of all three of its cores combined to run all tasks. The eight-core CPU of the PS3 allows for more stunning and realistic graphics and also for faster processing speed, compared to the Xbox 360’s three-core CPU. In contrast, the PS3 has nearly three times the amount of graphic processing power than the Xbox 360. Another important aspect that one should look at while making their decision is the type of media that each console uses. The PS3 uses a fairly new technology called Bluray-ROM and the Xbox 360 uses the very familiar DVD-ROM that is widely used everywhere. The Bluray-ROM has 50GB of storage space on one disc, where as the DVD-ROM, on the other hand, only has a total of 15GB of storage space per disc. The Bluray-ROM also uses a blue optical laser to extract and read information at a much higher rate than the standard red optical laser that a DVD-ROM uses. Clearly the PS3’s Bluray technology allows for more game content and faster loading times as well as high definition movies.
