It is important to have a holistic approach to managing pain and discomfort as this is looking at a situation as a whole and how the ways of managing pain and discomfort can have an impact on the persons life. When you find where the pain comes from this can help you decide the best way to treat it. When you know the cause you can resolve the problem more accurately. Their pain maybe emotional if they are concerned about something, it may also be due to anxiety or worry about what may happen to them. 2. Repositioning individuals and adjusting the bedding, heating, lighting or noise could help to reduce pain. Also use of a specialised mattress and pressure reducing aids could help relieve pain. There are many ways to minimise discomfort such as: * Drugs, massage, electrical therapies, hot or cold packs, acupuncture, herbal medication, aromatherapy and just talking to somebody to relieve anxiety. 3. Before using any methods to manage pain the individual needs to be assessed as every kind of pain relief can be harmful. A care plan needs to be put in place outlining the patients diagnosis (if appropriate) needs, recommended outcomes and meds charts etc. policies and procedures always have to be followed and necessary precautions have to be taken Outcome 2. 1. Severe pain or discomfort could really transform an individual. It can affect the way a person eats and drinks i.e difficulty in swallowing. It can cause frustration and unreasonable behaviour in a person who is normally calm and in control, it could also make resting, relaxing and sleeping difficult, leading a person to feel stressed suffering from insomnia and in some cases depression.
