Provide a comparative discussion of computer mediated communication and face-to-face interpersonal communication. The computer has revolutionised the way we communicate. Some several decades ago, in order to stay in contact with one another, you would have to send letters in the post. This form of communication is now referred to as ‘snail mail’ by electronic mail enthusiasts, because of how slow it is in comparison to modern alternatives. In today’s society, a large majority of conversation takes place online; this is known as computer-mediated communication or CMC. (Joseph A Devito, 2007). Electronic Mail, most commonly known as email, is one of leading forms of communication in today’s society. It is a method of sending and receiving digital messages, which in modern times, operates through the Internet. Being the most popular form of CMC, approximately 294 billion messages are sent per day, which means more than 2.8 million emails are sent every second and some 90 trillion emails are sent per year, (2010). There is a long list of positive things to say about electronic mail as a form of communication. Used by friends, family, colleagues and businesses, it is a fast way of sending text-based messages. As well as this, emails allow you to forward pictures, documents and music to anyone with an email address and access to the Internet. You can communicate not just across cities, or countries, but also across international boarders. Email is an ever-growing tool in the business industry because it’s a quick, efficient and cheap way of communicating with customers, as well as those within the organisation itself. You can reach people directly without having to go through 3 other people first. Emails can be sent to large groups of people within seconds.
