Pros and Cons of Text Messages

Text messaging is the most widespread form of communication among young people in the 21st century because they think that it is easier and funnier than other forms of communications. However, some people believe that texting may destroy proper language and sociability. Considering both sides, there are advantages and disadvantages. First of all, text messages are fast and convenient. You can talk to someone without disturbing other people and they are useful where voice call may not be permitted. In addition, if the phone is turned off text messages lay in wait until it will be turned on again. Two conversations, also, can be simultaneous. They can be saved and therefore if you forget something, you can always find it. Furthermore, they are cheap since in some countries, long-distance calling prices are exorbitantly higher than the cost of text messages making them much more affordable than a traditional voice call. Finally, productivity can really get a boost from text messages. They can be an effective form of mass communication in cases of emergency. For example, in a hospital if all doctors have PDAs and there is a serious problem, the reception can send them a message simultaneously to all of them without losing its time by calling them. On the other hand, a big disadvantage is the lack of language usage. Many teenagers use abbreviations like LOL instead of lot of laughing BTW instead of by the way. This results in the deterioration of grammar and spelling. In addition, text messages are impersonal since we can’t see other people’s face or listen to their voice. That’s why sometimes texting causes misunderstandings between friends. In conclusion, text messages make our life easier and more convenient but they should be used in moderation otherwise they will cause problems in our personal
