If you get up in the morning and greet yourself with a cup of coffee, you are one of the billions of people around the world who enjoy drinking coffee. According to the latest statistics from the International Coffee Organization, we pour 1.4 billion cups of coffee a day worldwide. That’s a lot of coffee, and about 45 percent of it is drunk here in the United States. And these days, with the popularity of coffee and other caffeine based products, it’s very important that we take the amount of coffee into consideration as coffee is such a complex beverage that has both positive and negative effects on coffee drinkers’ health. Many people have been wondering how coffee affects people in positive ways. Well, research over the past few years suggests that coffee consumption may protect against type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver cancer, and liver cirrhosis. Dr. Dam also studied on coffee and found that people who regularly drank coffee actually had a somewhat lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease than those who barely drank coffee; however, this result needs to be confirmed in further studies, so it’s not at the stage where we should say, “Start drinking coffee to increase your health even if you don’t like it.” Since the studies on the upsides of coffee are not 100 percent completed, people become more curious about the downsides of drinking coffee. And one of the studies conducted by Dr. Michael Breus found that consuming coffee can interfere with sleeping quantity by reducing the total sleep time and can also interfere with sleeping quality by increasing the time spent awake during a night. It’s not only the caffeine in coffee that causes sleeping problems, but also the way one’s body reacts to caffeine.
