NEED OF THE PROJECT
The City of Camden, New Jersey has recently been ranked as “second dangerous city and fifth poorest city” (Legal Services of New Jersey, 2007, p. 4) in the nation. Camden has an extremely high per capita when it comes to the crimes of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and burglary and auto theft (Six & Goodman, 2007). Camden is consistently on the top of the FBI's most dangerous cities list every year. It is most dangerous city " is based on crime statistics in six categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and auto theft (Goodman, 2007).
An estimated 42% of the total population 79,383 lives at or below the poverty level. The per capital income is under $11,239 (Information Publication [IP], 2008). During the past fifty years, Camden has been transformed into an enclave of concentrated poverty. Approximately 40% of the city’s residents are under 18 years of age and 51% of the Camden Children live in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau [U.S. Census], 2000). This exceeds the percent of children in poverty in 25 of New Jersey’s most impoverished cities, including Asbury Park (39%), and Newark (36%) (Association for Children of New Jersey [ACNJ], 2008).
