Adversity Essay - Final Draft Sometimes life presents us with difficult tasks that unfortunately get the best of us, but with rugged times comes en emotional force that impels us to push forward. A roman poet once said “adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” Think of (1)Wilma Rudolph an Olympic gold medalist, but as a child suffered polio, (2) Helen Keller, first dead/blind person to acquire a bachelors degree in the Arts, or rapper (3)Jayceon Taylor aka The Game. Despite their troubles past, each manage to push through arduous situations and accomplish their goals. [THESIS] As a child [transition], (1) Wilma Rudolph suffered numerous illnesses, one of which was polio, a crippling disease that could lead to a partial or full paralysis. Regardless of this [transition A], Rudolph went against all the odds and by the age of twelve she managed to walk normally without the help of crutches, braces, or corrective shoes; it was then, that she realized her calling: running. By the time [transition B] she was twenty, Wilma Rudolph had entered the Olympics twice, earning her a total of one bronze medal and 3 gold medals which was a first in for an American woman, making her the most celebrated female athlete of her time! Without her disease ridden past, Rudolph would have never pushed herself to become an Olympic gold medalist. In other words [trainsition C], Wilma Rudolph’s misfortune was a hidden blessing. [clincher] Imagine, a dark and silent world. Such a world existed to the deaf blind (1) Helen Keller. As an infant [transition A], she contracted an illness that took away both her sight and hearing. Her mother assigned her an instructor in the hopes that her daughter would have a normal life. Helen quickly took on, and embraced the knowledge her instructor had to offer.
