Mentorship Competency The success of any nursing student in any program in any clinical setting is multi-faceted enhancing the complicated nature of education and the perception of competencies whether student or educator. This is an important concept to be sensitive to as the process of moving forward with the knowledge and skill-sets needs to be supported and nurtured in order to facilitate the standard of care that is safe, accountable, and competent. The expectations of students within academia and within the staff mix on units can vary giving students a sense of role ambiguity diminishing the sense of belonging and taking away from the clinical learning experience. According to Employment Equity and Diversity (2004), the mentor needs to be a person who is aware of their responsibilities in supporting staff and require training and resources to support them in their role. I assigned be a mentor to a new qualified midwifery nurse. I called her Nurse A (Appendix A). Even thought she has experience working in the surgical and medical unit before, she still need an experience and knowledgeable staff to guide and mentor her in a new clinical area .She is a very proactive person and willing to learn. Identifying learning needs, planning and managing the .student experience Plans of action formulated in order to achieve the learner's objectives.
The contribution of the whole team will improve the quality and continuity of the care and provide the best outcomes for the patient. Delegation and Teamwork It is obvious that Ms. W is concerned about Ms. R so the nursing supervisor should approach her with that in mind. She should speak to her privately and find out the reasons why she is not delegating some of the tasks to the team. There are many barriers to delegation such as thee person feels they can do the task themselves, inadequate training in delegation, and reluctance to depend on others. The nursing supervisor should explain the importance of delegation in improving workflow and influencing positive patient outcomes.
Basically when a nurse does assessment, he or she comes up with a diagnosis, this diagnosis helps the nurse to better treat the patient. Baccalaureate nurses have better academic standings to come up with the proper diagnosis, which in turn will help the patient get the right and proper treatment. Baccalaureate nurses are also good planners in patient care, after the assessment and diagnosis, the planning of the patient care takes place, since baccalaureate have a higher knowledge and skills the plan efficiently on how to carry patients which honestly overshadows the associate degree nurse’s ways of planning patient care. Implementation or rather execution of the work itself takes a vital role too, the Baccalaureate take a upper hand in the patient care since they have the right knowledge than the associate degree nurses .Finally, after all is said and done, evaluation of the whole processes of patient care is carried to determine if indeed the optimum goal of patient treatment was a achieved. Baccalaureate nurses due to their education and evidenced based approach on tackling patient’s issues, they do a better evaluation on patients than their counterpart, associate degree nurses.
For example when a nurse sees that its patients exercise and watch his or her diet in order to lower its blood pressure or cholesterol the nurse should reward them by making a positive comment to them. In addition a good nurse should take their time to review its patient’s health history and their present history in regular bases. A good nurse will take some extra time to research about some health condition that its patient is going though. And a good nurse will keep in touch with its patient’s family and inform them about the patient’s health in regular bases if it’s ok with the patient. Finally a good nurse will respect its patient’s situation and have patience while he or she is in process of recovering.
Components of good documentation are the same as Watson’s theory and nursing process; assessment, plan of action, intervention, and evaluation. A caring nurse will want to be able to improve and become more efficient with documentation so that they are able to provide more direct nursing care to their patients. Carative factor number seven in Watson’s theory call for the promotion of interpersonal teaching-learning. This describes “the caring nurses as one that must focus on the learning process as much as the teaching process” (Current Nursing, 2012, para. 3).
Nursing indicators such as education on unnecessary use of restraints and not repositioning the patient every two hours, are failures to deliver quality care. The staff increased the chances of Mr. J to develop pressure ulcers. Also the use of restraints increased the chances of Mr. J to develop a deep vein thrombosis or pneumonia from lack of mobility. All members of the healthcare team are responsible to provide the best care possible and be an advocate for the people they care for. (American Nurses Association, 2015).
The decisions that nurses make can have a big impact on whether or not the outcome for the patient is a good or bad one. Pavlish et al. (2011) says that in, “ethically difficult situations. Clarifying advocacy actions could potentially steer nurses away from paternalism and contribute to more specific content for ethics education and more accountability for ethical actions in clinical practice” (p. 386). What this statement is trying to say is that instead of making emotional decisions that can potentially hurt the patient, a nurse can make a decision that educates and benefits the patient.
