Increasingly corporations are becoming Virtual in nature; customers, suppliers and employees are no longer in the same city but in different time zones and continents. Hand-in-hand with the Virtual Corporation is the Virtual Project Manager, and his/her enablers are leadership and technology. This new kind of team is called “virtual team” where members communicate electronically and meet in the cyber space. The Internet and collaborative software have made it easier and faster to communicate across vast distances. This ever-changing environment has set the stage for new dimension of project management “virtual project management”. With communication tools exploding and maturing exponentially, the project manager of these virtual corporations must learn to not only embrace but also fully utilize emerging technologies and adjust their management style. Managing virtual project team environment is fundamentally different from managing traditional projects. Project Management (PM) is the discipline of planning, organizing and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. Now when you take a global environment, where team members, all across different globes, cultures, time zones- the challenges grow exponentially when you try to manage the three constraints of project management – time, cost and performance. With the scattering of the team, you have thus created a Virtual Team and the need for Virtual Project Management (VPM).
