American Literature Authors and Their Works Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864) * He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, The United States, July 4th 1804 * His first novel was called ‘Fanshawe’ and turned out to be very unsuccessful * He is seen as a key figure in the development of American literature for his tales of the nation's colonial history. * He died in New Hampshire in 1864. 1.
