Professional Licensure Plan Samantha Stahn Argosy University Professional Licensure Plan In the state of Arizona, where I intend to practice counseling once fully licensed, there are many requirements that must be met prior to one obtaining licensure. First of all, one must have a Master’s Degree in Counseling and have completed all required graduate work accredited by CACREP. Following the degree, one must practice counseling under supervision for a certain amount of time. Afterwards, one must pass the National Counselor Examination to obtain the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). To obtain a Master’s Degree in Counseling, one must complete 60 semester hours of graduate course work with core course requirements in the following: Professional Ethics, Counseling Theories, Basic counseling test and appraisal, Diagnosis/Assessment/Treatment planning, Marriage and family therapy, Research Methodology, Theory and Practice of Group Counseling, Career Development and Counseling, Human growth and development, Basic counseling skills/Helping relationship, social and cultural diversity issues, and Chemical Dependency counseling. After the counselor-in-training obtains his/her master’s degree, then he/she must have supervision training. Prior to applying for licensure, supervision in the state of Arizona requires a minimum of 3200 hours in no less than 24 months. I still have a few graduate classes to take. For Fall I semester, I am taking PC6106 Foundations of Mental Health counseling. In Fall II, I will be taking PC6712 Diagnosis and Treatment of Behavioral and Emotional Disorders. In Spring I, I am planning on taking PC6700 Couples and Family Counseling. During Spring II, I will be taking PC6803 Trauma Impact and Counseling. During Summer I it will be PC6030 Psychopathology and Assessment followed by PC6300 Professional and Ethical Issues in Summer II. I am prepared to begin Practicum in the fall of 2016 along with taking my comprehensive exam. Afterwards, I will be starting my internship I and II in the spring through summer of 2017. I have been directed by my academic advisor to attend the mandatory training meeting this December 2015 to apply for the August 2016-2017 training year. In the fall of 2017, I will also be studying to take my Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) prior to my graduation which is required in order to graduate from the program. If everything goes according to plan, I intend to take my NCE exam in the fall of 2019 following my 3200 hours of required supervision. I hope to be fully licensed shortly
