Agven MAC 208 Professional Development The Adler School of Professional Psychology Assignment 5.2: Journal Two About six weeks ago I was treating a client with a diagnosis of Bell’s palsy. Bell’s palsy is paralysis or weakness to one side of the face and its cause is not clear. It is largely believed that a virus attacks the facial nerve controlling one side of the face resulting in damage and the above-mentioned symptoms. In physical therapy, intervention involves neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to the affected area, therapeutic exercises, and/or massage. Utilizing NMES and therapeutic exercises simultaneously has shown a greater outcome in comparison to performing the interventions individually or in absence of the other. Regardless, the healing of a damaged nerve can be lengthy process, even with therapeutic intervention, which has been shown to decrease healing time. In treating this particular individual, I proceeded to utilize the NMES and therapeutic exercises simultaneously, which was not to the liking of the client. The client, during every single treatment session, would express that he did not like to do the exercises and only wanted to receive the massage and NMES. I, in turn, would proceed to educate the client on the greater benefits of performing the exercises in conjunction with the NMES and at this time the client would concede. This exact line of debate would occur in every single treatment session for period of about three weeks. Finally, during one session, the client stated that he would not do his exercises anymore and when I started to reeducate the client on the above-mentioned benefits he yelled at me. He stated that I did not know what I was doing and was just making things up and needed to go back to school instead of wasting his time. I, unfortunately, lost my patience,
