Problems with Chinese Oral English Education in Contemporary China

Foreign language teaching in colleges has a long history in China. Since the early 1990s, the study of foreign language teaching has been seen as one of the basic subjects in the class of universities. In 2003, the Ministry of Education modified College English Syllabus. The purpose of this amendment is to improve the students' ability in the application of English, to adaption with the increasing demands of the economic development and social progress of personnel training. It requires college students should use proper English in the process of learning, communicating, discussing a topic, and talking with native speakers about everyday topics with clear pronunciation and tone of voice. Speech acts theory was put forward by Jane Austin who explained the theory in his series of books How to do Things with Words when he was giving lectures in Harvard University in 1955. He found that speech acts is too powerful to affect the way for people to learn. However, there are many problems when teachers give oral English lectures to students. In the classroom, oral English teaching is usually in the traditional teaching mode which is the teacher-centered and unitary teaching method. They are also doing "Force-feeding" education. The model we usually use is that the teacher stands on the stage, sets the scene and gives sentence patterns, while the students practice exercises and make conversations mechanically. Although the conversation is carried on between two students, they still do it mechanically following the textbook. The students are always put in the passive way to accept teachers' instruction and guidance, not to mention the capacity of having the opportunity to cultivate their creative ability.
