Modifying a Lesson Plan for English Language Learners (ELL) By Linda Brown Teaching Literacy to ELL Students E6536 Instructor: Ella Benson Argosy University As the number of English learners increases in schools across the United States, educators are seeking effective ways to help them acquire the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the classroom. The SIOP Model* is a research-based and validated model of sheltered instruction. Professional development in the SIOP Model helps teachers plan and deliver lessons that allow English learners to acquire academic knowledge as they develop English language proficiency. The Center for Applied Linguistics is an excellent place for educators to gather research-based tools for working effectively with English Language Learners. This is a model, I will use to create a lesson plan for ELL students. The key points are to clearly post, refer to, and review learning objectives and language objectives.
While this statements sound so simplistic, it’s really being lost in the world of teaching. While trying to keep up with testing standards and needs of students, we as teachers must make sure that we are not creating ignorant thinkers. As teachers we must accept that we don’t have all the answers and that just like students, we are constantly learning. When Dr. Wayson was speaking, I couldn’t
11 December 2014 Drowning in the Discourse Julie Wildhaber says that “A strong, well-defined voice is the bridge between you and your audience: It helps your readers understand who you are, and it helps you engage them” (Wildhaber). For students in college, their audience will always be their professor. Along with expecting a strong voice, professors expect students, even first year students, to master and employ the many other writing skills that make up academic discourse. Most students tend to prioritize the more technical conventions of writing over the development of a distinguished and personalized voice. The conventions of college writing are very complex and if professors are more helpful and patient with first year students as they learn academic discourse, students will be better prepared for all future academic endeavors and they will have a better opportunity to strengthen and develop their voice.
Most students don’t want to disappoint their teacher and having to appeal to the teacher for not having the homework turned in on time, So they will make sure to keep up with their work and what is expected of them. By having requirement like due date allows students to be mindful of prioritizing and time management. For teachers, building these bonds with students helps to develop an extensive repertoire of strategies, tools and methods
One implication is there is a gradual increase of responsibility for the teacher. Through courageous conversations teachers are having with collegial coaches and their peers, teachers are taking charge of their classrooms, and not waiting for the administrator or mentor to give advice. Teachers are answering open-ended question from coaches and peers and making self-reflections that are having positive impacts in their classrooms. The second implication is the courageous conversations that the teachers are having in their buildings. Teachers are coming out of their classrooms and meeting with other teachers and sharing strategies, and asking questions that have other teachers thinking about how to have more successful classroom experiences.
It is the schools responsibility to be able to provide good enough teachers, who can prepare these students. In order to have a good education, there must be qualified teachers there to teach and prepare students effectively. Bauerlein questions schools curriculums and the way they are presenting “complex texts” (Bauerlein) to the students; “The more high school teachers place complex texts on the syllabus and concoct slow, deliberate reading exercises for students to complete, the more they will inculcate the habit” (Bauerlein). Students learn what their teachers tell them they have to learn, without knowing the effects the teachings will have on them whether good or bad. That is why schools providing qualified teachers are so important
This contains teaching the grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. It may also contain teaching pronunciation and accent reduction. It's basically teaching all the target language skills that will allow speakers of other languages to effectively converse in the target language. Furthermore, language teacher tasks often include presenting cultural aspects to the students, particularly to those who are new to the target language speaking country. In addition to the straightforward teaching duties, language instructors working in private language schools will have to take attendance and provide evaluations of student progress.
* Ensure that, if you do quote briefly from a book or other source, you reference the quote by using quotation marks “ “ and name the source (e.g. author and title). * Ensure that, if you have been working with others as a group, you don’t copy from others, but offer only your own work for assessment. We encourage students to collaborate but collusion to commit fraud must be avoided. * Ensure that, in practical classes, all work must be seen as ongoing by your tutor.
The implications of the findings were changing beliefs of the observation teacher as well as the demonstration teacher. At times, mentor teachers remain comfortable in the role of “this is how I 4 learned to teach and this is how teaching will always be at our school”. Teachers periodically rethink “outside of the box” and move away from the mindset of sharing the same old concepts to new teachers. (Boring!!!) Teaching and learning styles must change if education is to propel into the future with quality-educated teachers and students.
